Following emancipation in 1863, watermelons became a symbol of freedom and self-sufficiency for African Americans, though later distorted into racist stereotypes of poverty and idleness. This work seeks to reclaim and redefine that narrative. Here, the watermelon is transformed into a helmet and shield, which signs signify resilience and strength.

The vibrant colours, sharp contrasts, and commanding pose assert defiance, while the gold accents lend a grace that dignifies this resistance.
